Can you change?

My heart is heavy with the weight of my own sin and the need for change.

As a Christian wife and mother I have a lot going on in my life. I can easily get busy and allow life to whisk me away. I can ignore my selfishness, pride, and lust by staying busy and distracted. The truth is, Satan wants to keep us busy. A famous quote:

“If Satan can’t make us bad he’ll make us busy.”

This quote is a little deceiving because Satan can’t “make” us do anything but this is often true. We allow ourselves to become so busy that we neglect personal reflection and examination. We don’t climb into our closet of prayer and seek God’s face. Throughout scripture we are exhorted to examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith.

Why is it important to look intently at our hearts? God did not create us to just maintain a level of morality. He created us to become like his Son, Jesus Christ. We are to be Holy just as he is Holy. If we all took a hard look at ourselves we would humbly admit are epic failures in view of who Christ is. In Colossians 3:10

and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,

As a Christian our attitudes should be of willful submission to change. It would be unbiblical to mentally assent to the idea that you can’t change! Yes, its hard but needful. The time we as believers spend on earth is just in preparation for heaven. Our goal on earth is to reflect the image of Christ and share the gospel with those around us. Sin has tainted our flesh and the battle will continue until we reach heaven but scripture doesn’t allow us to relax. The moment we relax and feel as though we have it under control is when we end up falling on our faces.

The battle begins in the mind. Be transformed by the word of God. Change your view of God, sin, and yourself through the word of God. Meditate on the word throughout the day and memorize scripture. Spend a lot of time in intimate prayer with your creator and savior. Share your heart with your husband and surround yourself with God fearing people.

Admit and confess your sin. If you are anything like me, you are thinking at this moment of 1 or 2 areas in your life in which you need to confess and change. Remember its not only enough to separate yourself from the sin, you also need to do the right thing as well. You need to put off the old person and put on the new man.

Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Ephesians 4:28

If you want to change seek the Lord. Read the word and pray for him to change you through the Spirit. Believe that he will change you and then pick one area to take that step towards change. Take baby steps and remember its a process and it takes time. Habits are hard to break.
