Rest and Relaxation

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Psalm 46:10

The writer of this Psalm is declaring the sovereignty and care of the Lord for his people. As the writer describes the ever changing earth we are to find stability in our unchanging God. Our God is ever present to help us in our times of trouble. He is sovereign and cares for his people more than we can imagine. Of course we get a glimpse of his love at the cross and we daily experience his provision. We understand God’s omnipresence (everywhere), omniscience (knows all), and omnipotence (all powerful). The writer gives us two imperatives and two declarations.

An imperative in the Hebrew is a command. We are commanded to:
~ Be still – to sink or relax
~ To know – Acknowledge

The Declarations are what we are to look forward to:
~ God will be exalted by the nations
~ God will be exalted on the Earth

No matter what is going on in our crazy busy lives we need to remember who is in charge. We need that quiet time to sit and reflect on who God is and praise his worthy name. We can simply forget that God holds all things together and get whisked away by worry and or pride. Lets stay focused, humbled, and in awe of who has redeemed us and sustains us both now and forever. Relax and trust him.
